The Village That Borrowed the Moon, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Village That Borrowed the Moon

The bell fell silent. The villagers refused to move. “The bargain was for one season,” the Moon Keeper said. “The moon returns tonight.” The woman raised the baby. “Take it, and you take the children.” The Moon Keeper studied the child’s shadowless hand, then the iron ring. A second mark had been carved beside the original seal. “That was not part of our bargain.” The woman stepped closer. “What does it mean?” The Moon Keeper pressed a key to the iron ring. Every child in the village began to cry. “One of you bound a new debt to the moon. No one leaves until I find out who.”

The Map That Refused North, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Map That Refused North

Ansel returned to the map room and copied the new border. As the ink dried, the line stopped at the blank valley. It moved beneath his hand, bent east and wrote one word inside the border: DEREN. He let go of the pen. It rolled to the floor, but the line kept moving. Ansel backed into a shelf and sent brass compasses crashing across the boards. He had never seen dry ink move. He shouted for Master Vale. Vale entered, took one look at the map and locked the door behind him. “Do not touch it,” he said. “If the royal inspector sees Deren there, neither of us will leave this room.”

The Empty Jury Seat, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Empty Jury Seat

During the break, Tessa asked Juror Six who had been sitting in Seat Nine. “Mr. Bell. Gray suit, red tie.” Juror Ten frowned. “No. Her name was Anna. She lent me a pen.” The others remembered different faces, but each insisted Seat Nine had been occupied during jury selection. Tessa opened the selection record. Juror Nine had answered every question. The transcript marked each reply as inaudible. The name field was blank. Judge Mercer closed the file. “Seat the alternate and stop asking. This trial begins today.”

Oxygen Debt, a collaborative story on Tellast

Oxygen Debt

Mara opened the deduction details. The station had charged her for every breath taken outside sleep hours. A red line at the bottom read: CREDIT LIMIT REACHED. She laughed once. “Very funny, Tomas.” His grin faded when the vent above her bunk clicked shut. Mara held her hand beneath it. No airflow. Across the module, vents began closing one by one. Tomas checked his own account. “Mine says I can transfer minutes.” A message appeared on Mara’s screen: OXYGEN SERVICE ENDS IN 04:59.

The Drawing, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Drawing

Lisa placed the drawing face down and finished the lesson. After the last child left, the teacher next door came in holding a phone. “One of my students has been sick all week. Her mother sent this. Do you know what it is?” On the screen, seven children stood by the water beneath a black sun. A thin red line reached from the water to their feet. Lisa turned over the drawing on her desk. The figures, colors, even the crooked horizon were identical. “When did she draw it?” “Just after ten.” Lisa looked at the clock. Her student had begun at the same time.

Available Balance, a collaborative story on Tellast

Available Balance

He called the bank. As he worked his way through the endless automated menus, trying to reach a customer service representative, he muttered to himself, "Why is it so hard to talk to a real person?" After bouncing from one menu to another, he suddenly stopped and thought, "Why am I the one trying to reach them? They're the ones who made the mistake. Besides, they'll fix it sooner or later anyway." Then, with a faint smile, he thought, "I guess part of me is actually wondering if I'll get to keep it." He hung up the phone. Even if it was just a mistake, there was a fortune sitting in his account, and for the moment, he decided to enjoy the feeling. Even if it would only last for a little while. Smiling to himself, he whispered, "Maybe I'll show the balance to the guys... just to impress them."

The Key Emma Kept, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Key Emma Kept

Emma carried Mr. Hale’s spare key for six years. Last winter, he asked her to promise that she would not call his son or let anyone decide he could no longer live alone. That evening, smoke curled beneath his door. Emma let herself in and pulled a burning pan from the stove. Mr. Hale sat awake in his chair. “I turned it off hours ago,” he said. The phone on the table began to ring. The screen read DANIEL—his son. Mr. Hale looked at the key in Emma’s hand. “You promised.”

The Joke in the Alibi, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Joke in the Alibi

Caleb sat in the taxi company’s cramped office and read the detective’s statement. A robbery suspect claimed he rode in Caleb’s cab when the crime occurred. The pickup point was correct. So were the three addresses he requested. The final line included the passenger’s joke about Caleb’s broken dashboard clock. Caleb remembered the night clearly. Those words came from his passenger. The detective placed a photograph on the desk. “Was this your passenger?” Caleb studied it. “No,” he said. “But he knows what we talked about.”
