The Key Emma Kept, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Key Emma Kept

Emma carried Mr. Hale’s spare key for six years. Last winter, he asked her to promise that she would not call his son or let anyone decide he could no longer live alone. That evening, smoke curled beneath his door. Emma let herself in and pulled a burning pan from the stove. Mr. Hale sat awake in his chair. “I turned it off hours ago,” he said. The phone on the table began to ring. The screen read DANIEL—his son. Mr. Hale looked at the key in Emma’s hand. “You promised.”

The Joke in the Alibi

Caleb sat in the taxi company’s cramped office and read the detective’s statement. A robbery suspect claimed he rode in Caleb’s cab when the crime occurred. The pickup point was correct. So were the three addresses he requested. The final line included the passenger’s joke about Caleb’s broken dashboard clock. Caleb remembered the night clearly. Those words came from his passenger. The detective placed a photograph on the desk. “Was this your passenger?” Caleb studied it. “No,” he said. “But he knows what we talked about.”

The Rehearsal Heist, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Rehearsal Heist

The museum was closed on Mondays. That morning, only guards and four actors rehearsing next month’s show were inside. Lena put on a black mask and raised her fake gun. “Everybody down! This is a robbery!” The guard by the door turned away to hide a laugh. Just then, the back door opened. Three figures in black slipped inside. The first man looked Lena up and down. “We were told there’d be six of us.” Lena assumed the director had added actors to the rehearsal. “You’re late,” she said. The man pulled a heavy glass cutter from his bag and offered it to her. “Then you start.”

Free Heating, a collaborative story on Tellast

Free Heating

The boiler’s ignition had broken three days ago. The repairman said the radiators would stay cold until a new part arrived. But Matt’s room was getting warmer every night. He told his mother. She checked the thermometer and shrugged. “Maybe it’s coming from upstairs.” That night, Matt got up for water and heard a tiny sneeze from the basement. Warm air moved through the pipes, and his radiator rattled. He put on his slippers and went downstairs. Orange light shone beneath the boiler room door. Matt reached for the handle. Another sneeze came from inside.

Ten Thousand Uniforms, a collaborative story on Tellast

Ten Thousand Uniforms

Since the siege began, Aron had kept his shop’s shutters only half open. Cloth was scarce, and customers even scarcer. That morning, two soldiers appeared at his door. One placed a sealed order on the counter. “Orders from the palace. Every tailor in the city is to make ten thousand uniforms within three days.” Aron scanned the list. “Ten thousand? We don’t have that many soldiers.” The soldier said nothing. Aron pulled the paper closer when he noticed the crest in the drawing. “This isn’t our uniform.” The soldier turned toward the door. “Those are the orders.”

The Orchard Under Ice, a collaborative story on Tellast

The Orchard Under Ice

Nora had spent three months at the polar research station. From its windows, it was sometimes hard to tell where the ground ended and the horizon began. Inside, the drill’s hum never left the walls. That morning, the team thought they had reached a new layer of rock beneath the ice. When the drill suddenly stopped, Nora leaned over the borehole. “Stuck again?” Elias asked. Nora didn’t answer. She carefully pulled a thin branch from the ice. A small red fruit hung from it. Elias stepped closer. “It isn’t frozen.” Nora touched the fruit. “No,” she said. “It looks freshly picked.”

Everyone knew he never left the palace. One day, while checking a pair brought in for routine care, Theo found dried mud on the left shoe. He grabbed it and ran to his master. “Master! The king went outside. There’s mud on his shoe!” His master didn’t even look up. “It must have come from somewhere else, Theo. You know the king never leaves the palace.”

One Square Meter

Leo and Max were two mischievous friends about the same age. They usually got along great. I just haven’t named it yet.” “You only want it because I want it! You couldn’t even be bothered to name it!” “Just because I haven’t named it doesn’t mean it can’t be mine,” Max said. “I’ve already decided what I’m going to do with it!”
