Chapter 1

At sunrise, Ansel unlocked the map room alone for the first time. After three years of sharpening quills and copying coastlines, he had finally been trusted with a royal commission: the kingdom’s new northern border. He found Deren on the old chart, the village where his mother still lived. On the king’s survey, it was gone. Ansel carried both maps to Master Vale. “Why is Deren missing?” Vale did not look up. “Copy what the king sent. Nothing else.”

Chapter 2

Ansel returned to the map room and copied the new border. As the ink dried, the line stopped at the blank valley. It moved beneath his hand, bent east and wrote one word inside the border: DEREN. He let go of the pen. It rolled to the floor, but the line kept moving. Ansel backed into a shelf and sent brass compasses crashing across the boards. He had never seen dry ink move. He shouted for Master Vale. Vale entered, took one look at the map and locked the door behind him. “Do not touch it,” he said. “If the royal inspector sees Deren there, neither of us will leave this room.”
