Chapter 1
For one season, the village of Lume borrowed the full moon. Flowers bloomed beneath its light and fed the villagers through a winter that would otherwise have killed them. When the season ended, the Moon Keeper came to reclaim it. The villagers blocked his path at the hilltop. Above them, the full moon hung within a ring woven from iron branches. “The bargain is over,” the Moon Keeper said. A woman held out her sleeping baby. “These children were born under borrowed light. If the moon leaves, it will take them too.” A bell rang from inside the iron ring.
