Chapter 1
For one season, the village of Lume borrowed the full moon. Flowers opened under its light and fed the village through a winter that might have killed them. When the season ended, the moon keeper sent Mara to collect it. The villagers blocked the path to the hill. Above them, the full moon hung inside a ring of iron branches. “The bargain is over,” Mara said. A woman held out a sleeping baby. “These children were born under borrowed light. If the moon leaves, it takes them too.” A bell rang behind Mara. The keeper was coming.
