Chapter 1

For one season, the village of Lume borrowed the full moon. Flowers bloomed beneath its light and fed the villagers through a winter that would otherwise have killed them. When the season ended, the Moon Keeper came to reclaim it. The villagers blocked his path at the hilltop. Above them, the full moon hung within a ring woven from iron branches. “The bargain is over,” the Moon Keeper said. A woman held out her sleeping baby. “These children were born under borrowed light. If the moon leaves, it will take them too.” A bell rang from inside the iron ring.

Chapter 2

The bell fell silent. The villagers refused to move. “The bargain was for one season,” the Moon Keeper said. “The moon returns tonight.” The woman raised the baby. “Take it, and you take the children.” The Moon Keeper studied the child’s shadowless hand, then the iron ring. A second mark had been carved beside the original seal. “That was not part of our bargain.” The woman stepped closer. “What does it mean?” The Moon Keeper pressed a key to the iron ring. Every child in the village began to cry. “One of you bound a new debt to the moon. No one leaves until I find out who.”
