Chapter 1
Nora weighed every passenger before allowing the tower elevator to rise. The old cables were unforgiving, and the brass scale beside the gate had never lied. On Tuesday morning, six bakers stepped aboard with empty baskets. Together they weighed 912 pounds. Nora locked the gate and pulled the lever for the market on floor seven. Halfway up, the warning bell rang. The cabin had gained 180 pounds. Nobody moved. Then flour began spilling from one baker's empty basket, and a voice beneath it said, "Please don't send me back down."
