Chapter 1
Caleb sat in the taxi company’s cramped office and read the detective’s statement. A robbery suspect claimed he rode in Caleb’s cab when the crime occurred. The pickup point was correct. So were the three addresses he requested. The final line included the passenger’s joke about Caleb’s broken dashboard clock. Caleb remembered the night clearly. Those words came from his passenger. The detective placed a photograph on the desk. “Was this your passenger?” Caleb studied it. “No,” he said. “But he knows what we talked about.”
